Seaside Mini-Vacation

Sorry, peeps, layoffs and new job duties have rendered my time at work actual WORK time (psh!) so I've had less time to blog.

Here are Aurora and Gary at Taco Shark in Seaside, enjoying "dips" (Aurora's word for chips) and salsa.
We had half a day (Friday) of clear weather, where we enjoyed seafood, playing in the sand (Gary and Aurora), a prestolog fire and going to bed early.
Saturday it rained but we went out for fun and games in the morning, visiting the carousel, a toy store, and the Seaside Aquarium. I'd never been to the Seaside Aquarium before and it was pretty neat. We ended up buying 5 little trays of fish for the seals and we all enjoyed throwing the seals fish and getting splashed by the impatient seal. (Aurora didn't like getting water in her eyes, though.)
Sunday Aurora and I went to the beach and found lots of jellyfish to look at and touch (gently!) and then came back to the motel for a nice hot bath. Then we came home.

Ding Dong

Here is Aurora, frolicking underneath the Criterion School bell at the State Fair last weekend. Unfortunately, we couldn't ring it but Aurora enjoyed posing well enough.

Aurora at School

We visited the Criterion Schoolhouse at the fair and this year Aurora was big enough to sit at a desk and do some schoolwork.

She colored two pictures and we hung one up on the board before we left.

And she didn't even get her hair dunked in an inkwell.

Nutty Baby

Aurora, Granny and I went to the State Fair this past Sunday, as is our family tradition.

Granny purchased Aurora some glasses to shield her from the "lun," which she cries piteously about whenever it shines in her face.

Here they were sharing a nut bar on the grass, as you can see by the chocolate on Aurora's chin.

Shopping is so boringzzzzz

Aurora was so tired the other night she fell asleep on the way to the mall, so I carried her into Sears and plopped her into a shopping cart. Then I enjoyed 30 minutes of quiet shopping. Ahhh. Then she woke up crying. D-oh.

Baby Pup Tent

Here's Aurora, watching her Mickey Mouse from (slightly) inside her new tent.

And there's my missing laundry! I folded it and couldn't figure out where it went, until I looked in the tent and noticed a whole lot more STUFF. Aurora had taken the sheets and towels and padded her tent for more comfort.

Gravy Baby

Aurora barely ate any dinner on Thursday but my mom cleverly offered her the gravy ladle to lick so at least she got some gravy in her.

I try to eat my 8 cups of gravy daily but it doesn't always work out. . .

Saturday Night Bath

My mom filled this bucket the other day (after scrubbing it, of course- she's very tidy) and Aurora enjoyed an after-dinner soak before stretching out in the big pool.

Hair Raising Photos

Aurora and I went to the playground yesterday while Gary and Arlo went to Krispy Kreme and the video game store. For some reason the twisty slide was particularly staticky and I got a couple of pictures of Aurora.

White! White!

Aurora enjoys running around half-naked, and we let her because it means she's more inclined to use the potty by herself without being asked.

Last night she announced that she had to go potty and ran upstairs to do her business. After coming down to high praise, I asked her if she had wiped (she says white instead of wipe.) Instead of answering, she ran over to the stairs and began the trip again. A few minutes later I heard her descending, and turning my head, got a snoutful of toilet paper. Good girl! Can you please put it in the garbage now and not in Mommy's face? Stairs again so she could put it in its proper place. She got a good workout!

The next time I went upstairs, I found hard evidence that she did indeed wipe. At least Mittens hadn't found it and clawed it up! Back into the bathroom it went.

Another Fair

Here's Aurora walking on the lawn at the Multnomah County Fair in May. She hates to sit still so my mom and I gobbled our food down (Aurora wasn't hungry, as usual) before Aurora got too antsy and had to explore.

I see a lot of the back of her head since she's so often running away from me.

Bok! Bok!

Every time we drive by any amount of trees, Aurora lets us know that she wants to stop and play. "Bok! Bok!" she cries, alerting us to a park in the vicinity and the potential for fun to be had.

We went to Mt Tabor last weekend for a short play. The playground by the off-leash area is old school with only a merry go round, slide, and swings.

Gary and Aurora went down the slide about 50 times, always being careful to tuck Aurora's arms and legs in so they wouldn't get caught on the side and broken (not kidding) while I tickled her tummy from the side as they slid down.

Then Gary and I sat on the merry go round while Aurora pushed us. She is such a good little helper since she doesn't know much about the drudgeries of Work yet.

Aurora is such a good climber. Here she is after we had dinner with Jen, James, Lily and baby James at the playground, running off our dinner (well, some of us. Others were just standing around talking).
Take a last look at her pink polliwalks, because she threw them out the window that night and I never found them. Good thing I got them for 75% off!

Wednesday, June 16, 2010

I know there's a lesson here, but when we're at the playground, my brain just can't muster the reserves to think about electrons and static and why it makes Aurora's hair stand on end.

It's pretty cute, though.

Tiny House

Here's Aurora in a little house at Portland Nursery last week.

She loves being in a space that's just her size, and she screamed and struggled when it was time to leave.

Let's Paint!

This weekend, Aurora and I went to our friend Stephanie's house to help her paint. Aurora is surprisingly well-behaved there, probably because she has the run of the place and there's not much for her to get into.

Enter paint cans with slightly open lids, and a bored, curious baby. (See above for what happens in that scenario.) Stephanie was already planning to pull out the rug (THANK GOD!) and the paint was a reject so not too much harm was done.

After walking through the slightly mopped up paint, Aurora had some more chili and chips, played with the dog and then got bored again.
I wonder what paint looks like, she thought, dipping her head closer and closer to the paint tray.

Then it was time to go home.

A Boxy Boat for Bear

Here are Aurora and her bear, sailing the seas of blankets. Well, the bear is in the boat. Aurora is obviously floating OUTSIDE the boat. And so boredly!

Now Get Belted in, Bear

Now that the weather is better, Aurora has been going on long drives. Here she is preparing for a roadtrip with her bear.

Gimme That!

Talk to the hand, people. Aurora's busy (happily so).

Toddler Tasks

Here's Aurora last week as we drove home from Granny's house. She is intently working on putting her necklace in the measuring cup and taking it out. I told her she could sit in the front seat if she did it a thousand times before we got home. We were almost home and she was only on 27. Oh, well. Maybe next time!

Sticky Rice and Wet Bear

Since the weather is getting nicer and I'm getting fatter, I've been thinking of fun ways to get out and get moving. One idea is to install the baby seat on my bicycle and take Aurora riding. (I also want to get her a balance bike but that's a birthday secret. Shh!)

So we went out and bought a nice yellow helmet on Saturday and now we just have to find some wheels. After our strenuous walk from the parking lot to the bike store we were famished, so we had to get some dinner right away. Here is Aurora, hogging down some sticky rice, and Gary patiently waiting for his noodles. After she finished with the rice she wanted to play with everything else on the table, and get down, and jump on the bench and give her bear a drink in my water glass. Surprisingly the bear didn't drown even though he got a dunking similar to what a witch might get back in the day. At least she didn't throw the wet bear into another diner's dinner. Finally dinner came and she tucked in (see above). Stuff stuff stuff...

Frosting Fun

Cousin Jen, Lily and sweet baby James came over last month for some hangin' out.

Everything else we did paled in comparison to our gastronomic activities, seen here with Arlo and Lily decorating cupcakes and Aurora fixated on Sweet Baby James, who's lolling around on the floor. Arlo mixed up the orange frosting that he's using- isn't the color great?

Stroller Cruelty

Aurora loves to push her own stroller around. Except when she's been walking for MILES- then she gets hungry and cranky, like in this photo.

We're so cruel to make her push the stroller ALL the way to the estate sale and then ALL the way back.

A Complete Easter Breakfast

Here is Aurora, toast and egg in hand, posing at our house during our easter egg hunt.

I punched up the colors in this photo- look how green the grass is! It really brings out her blue eyes and red hair, too.

That's me in the background, fooling with my phone.

Eggs and Bunnies and Ham, oh my!

What an exciting weekend we had! Aurora and Arlo helped me cook for the two Easter dinners we attended, to start. Here they are on Saturday, Arlo taking a break from stirring the chocolate cake batter to help Aurora stir her deviled egg mixture.
We went to Cousin Amy and Emma's house on Saturday for pre-Easter lunch. Amy's fiance Matt hid 250 candy-filled eggs throughout their house for the 7 kids to find. My camera is too slow to capture running and screaming, but here's one of Aurora sniffing the scented candles on Amy's front porch.
James and Cousin Jen had us over for dinner on Sunday, where we had honeybaked ham and cheesy potatoes and fresh, tender asparagus. The Easter bunny hid eggs from our house and theirs in their large yard, and boy was Lily excited about it! Aurora was happy to eat the egg she found (and the "ball" yolk), and Arlo was relieved that the Easter bunny hid eggs at our house AND there. Oh, the magic of the Easter bunny! And the deliciousness of HAM. Something for everyone, thank goodness!

More Children's Museum

Here are two more shots of smacky at the Children's Museum on Monday. She's checking out the fish in the top one and running to the treehouse in the bottom one. I would love to have a large enough house to have more fun things for Aurora and Arlo to do, or have some carpenter skills to build a play structure in the backyard (or $2000 to buy one!). Luckily there's the cultural pass from the Lake Oswego Library so we can go to the Children's Museum for free whenever we want.

Children's Museum

Aurora and I spent the afternoon at the Children's Museum yesterday. Ordinarily I would never set foot in a place that would be so overrun with children, but I thought it would be nice for Aurora.

Wow, it was great! I think it's not so great for bigger kids (or parents when it's very busy), but she's almost to the perfect age for it. We played with clay, she played in the water tubs, she dug in the rubber "dirt" in the dig pit, and she got to hang around a lot of other little ones. We also had a fun time in the treehouse.

Here she is in the baby area, painting some water in a trickling water feature.

Bedtime Snack

Here is Aurora last week, drinking milk in bed. We've been trying to run her around out after dinner, either at the park, the playground or on a walk, to help her go to sleep sooner at night and also have some fun and exercise.

She always wants her mimi before bed, though (and several times at night, too, dammit!). Here she is, having a bottle before I could wrestle her into her diaper and jammies.

Cupcakes and New Words

Cupcakes were our amusement this weekend when cousins Jennifer, Lily and James visited. Arlo mixed up some very nice orange frosting to go with our chocolate, Lily made some nice blue frosting, and Jen tinted coconut green.

Aurora only had the choice of chocolate but she got down and dirty with the rest of us (probably a little more dirty) and enjoyed her dessert very much.
"Noy?" she'll say when she sees this photo with her nose covered in frosting. After a few minutes in the garden this weekend she can now say weed ("wee"). Other new words are nine (fairly accurate as nine) and yowl, her name for Mithra. (Which is also fairly accurate; I've never heard a cat yowl as lustily as Mithra does.) She tried seaweed last night but it came out as WEEwee, a good try but just not there yet. Oh, and sssss for snake.

Sleeping Smack

Here's Aurora, sacked out AGAIN! Man that baby sleeps a lot.

Don't worry, she'll be waking up soon, begging for a bottle. God forbid she sleeps longer than 3 hours at a stretch. She might miss something!

Monday, February 15, 2010

Typety Type

Aurora got into my chair and positioned herself at the keyboard on Saturday, so when I turned around, I found her industriously typing away.

It looks like she's messing with the firewall or something. Luckily she wasn't changing my facebook status again! I'd much rather be open to viruses than have erroneous information on my whereabouts and activities posted! God forbid!

Sleepy Smacky

Aurora was so tired this morning that she awoke at 6:30 for some water and then went back to sleep DESPITE A LEAKY DIAPER.

I know she was super tired because she usually can't sleep with a wet diaper. She even stayed asleep when I turned the light on and took this shot. Even kisses and sniffing at her face didn't wake her up! Maybe she'll take another long nap today at daycare. Oh yeah.

Aurora and Arlo on a Friday

I found a bow I never used on Aurora when she was tiny, and surprisingly, she didn't rip it off right away!

Arlo snuck up behind her to mug, and since she can see the image on my phone as I take the photo, it held her attention. Looks like she's teething since she's chewing on her finger. Those little teeth sure are sharp!

Taters for the Tot

I made twice-baked potatoes last week at Arlo's suggestion- mmm, bacon, sour cream and cheese.

A normal sized one would have been way too big for Aurora, so I bought a tiny white potato and made her a mini.

Here she is, holding the skin. Is it edible? Who cares, there's a camera!

Secret Smile

Friday was Aurora's 18 month doctor visit. We played with Granny in the waiting room and the exam room, the doctor wasn't too late, and the shots weren' terrible. (Not for me, that is- Aurora cried and wailed during the actual poking but stopped fairly quickly afterwards.)

I gave her a little dog in a bag as a special bravery present and she went on to have a very fun day at Granny and Grandpa's. Here she is pre-immunization. So innocent. So happy. Either that or she's planning something disastrous for her diaper. Who can tell?

Salon Style

You may think it cruel to put the spotlight on a sleeping baby, but sometimes it's necessary for posterity.
Smacky's been having long cleansing, moisturizing and relaxing salon sessions at Granny's house. This mostly includes soaping up in the bath, secretly pouring water on Granny's sleeves and generally splashing about noisily.
Obviously it leaves her so relaxed that she sleeps like the dead, but it also leaves her hair baby-soft and as fluffy as a chick. Check it out.

I Hop for Breakfast

My mom and I and Smack went out to a fancy breakfast a while ago. No greasy spoon diner for us, thank you! Aurora got crayons and an activity page to keep her busy at THIS place.
There was a baby about Aurora's age at another table, so she enjoyed looking over at him, which helped keep her interest. Luckily there was no shrieking back and forth. 8am is simply too early for shrieking, Aurora.

Num Num at Norm's Garden

Aurora and I went to lunch this weekend with my cousin's family, and her husband James tied napkins around the babies' necks in lieu of bibs.

Aurora loved hers! She's all ready for some squash and fried rice. Num.

Splish Splash

Aurora always wants to wash her hands lately, especially now that we have a light-up faucet gadget. "Hot? Hot?" she says, reaching towards the faucet.

Last night I was busy in the kitchen and didn't want to stop to give her a bath, so I filled up the kitchen sink, got out a stepstool and threw in some toys (ok, tupperware and utensils- I was lazy). The floor had a big puddle and her clothes were soaked afterward, but she had a great time.

Hamster Saturday

McDonald's was our destination this Saturday, not for their biscuit sandwiches (except for me) but for the indoor habitrail to amuse the kids. It was Gary's day to sleep in but he opted for company despite it being at McDonald's. (He's not a fan.)

Aurora and Arlo crawled through the tunnels, Arlo helpfully pulling Aurora up the inclines and Aurora hollering when she needed help. Gary and I waited at the bottom of the two-story twisty slide, but I was the one who got to see Aurora's face as she flew down on her back, eyes terrified and hair fluffed around her head like a frightened cat.

Once she was safely off and congratulated, of course she said, "Mo?" and headed back up. What a thrillseeker!
